Schoharie County (pronounced Sko-HAIRY) is a county in New York State. Albany County is to the east, Greene County to the southeast, Delaware County to the southwest, Otsego County to the west, Montgomery County to the northwest, and Schenectady County to the northeast. It is included in various regions. The southern part of the county is considered part of the Catskills. The northeastern part of the county is considered part of the Capital District region. The northwestern part of the county is considered part of the Mohawk Valley region.
Schoharie County was formed in 1795. Its name is derived from the Mohawk Native American Language. In their language, the word “Schoharie” means “floating driftwood”.
