Traffic Tickets in Pitcairn
New York State Route 3 (NYS-3) is where most traffic stops are conducted. It passes through the hamlets of East Pitcairn, Kalurah, and Backus as it crosses town. As the NYS-3 goes into the hamlets, the 55-mph speed limit is reduced. This often ensnares out-of-town motorists.
Two large roads meet NYS-3 in Pitcairn. NYS-3 intersects New York State Route 812 (NYS-812) at the town’s southwest boundary. From there, NYS-812 runs north-northwest through Geers Corners and eventually leaves town through the northwest corner. In the northeast part of town, NYS-3 meets County Route 23 (East Pitcairn-South Edwards Road). CR-23 heads north until it leaves town. Heading eastbound on NYS-23 will bring you to the Town of Fine. Heading west will bring you to Harrisville, in the town of Diana.
The town lacks a police department. This means traffic patrols are conducted by the New York State Police or the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office. Both are authorized to initiate a traffic stop as long as there is probable cause of a violation. The tickets they issue to motorists are made answerable to the Pitcairn Town Court (Pitcairn Justice Court). Court sessions are held on the first and third Thursday of each month. The court is located in the Hamlet of Backus
