Town of Watertown, New York
Not to be confused with the City of Watertown
Watertown is the name of a town in Jefferson County, New York. It is located near the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, approximately seventy miles directly north of Syracuse and approximately thirty miles south of the Thousand Islands Border Crossing (Canadian border).
There is also the city of Watertown, which is mostly surrounded by the town. When people refer to Watertown, they generally refer to the city. The town makes up thirty-six square miles. The city only covers about nine and a half square miles. , the town has an estimated population of 6,000. The town contains the hamlets of Burrville, East Watertown, Huntingtonville, Rices, and Watertown Center.
Watertown was named so due to the nearby Black River. The river originates in the Adirondack Mountains and empties into Lake Ontario. The Black River played a vital role in the city’s early economy, encouraging businessmen to build mills and other factories nearby. Many of them used the river as a source of power. They also used the river to transport goods.
Traffic Tickets in Town of Watertown
If you received a traffic ticket in Watertown, the case can be adjudicated in the Watertown City Court or the Watertown Town Court, depending on the exact location of the alleged violation.
Of the two courts, the town court handles many more traffic violations. This is because of Interstate 81. The I-81 is an interstate highway that runs north-south through the entire New York State. A large portion of the highway runs along the eastern border of the town.
Through Watertown, the I-81 is three lanes in each direction with a 65-mph speed limit. Interstate highways are patrolled by New York State Police. They conduct frequent traffic stops in the area, mostly for speeding violations. Town court traffic cases also originate on local town roads. The busiest roads include US-11, NYS-3, NYS-12F, NYS-232, and NYS-12 (Gifford Street). Within the town, traffic stops can also be conducted by county sheriffs.
For any Watertown traffic related charges, it is probably prudent to contact a traffic lawyer before you take action. Most traffic attorneys offer free consultations. A lawyer can determine if the ticket is worth fighting and should be able to predict what kind of result can be obtained at the end of the case.
Two common misconceptions about traffic law often cause motorists to make a costly mistake when dealing with their ticket. The first mistake is the assumption that the person that received the summons would have to appear personally in court. The second mistake is the assumption that the only way to get the charges dropped or reduced is if the defendant presents a defense and proves the defense. Because of these urban legends, motorists simply plead guilty, thinking there is no other option.
The truth is, that in New York, your attorney can make any necessary court appearances for you. A motorist can sign an authorization that allows their attorney to handle anything related to the charges in their place. Furthermore, your attorney can fight the charges without presenting a defense. The burden of proof is on the prosecutor. A good traffic lawyer can find multiple grounds for reduction or dismissal by making arguments that the prosecutor did not meet that burden.
Fighting your ticket can save you a lot of money. New York State has one of the highest average fines for speeding and other moving violations. More importantly, getting your charges modified can save you a lot by allowing you to avoid increased car insurance rates.
