Watertown is a city in Jefferson County, New York. It is located on the western side of the Adirondack Mountains, approximately seventy-five miles north of Syracuse and approximately twenty miles east of the Canadian border. The area is known as the North Country region. There are only two cities in this large region, Plattsburgh and Watertown. Plattsburgh is on the eastern side of the Adirondacks. The city of Watertown is considered the main metropolitan area for large swaths of the region and multiple counties. The city is also the “seat” of Jefferson County, meaning it is home to all county government offices and county courts. The city is mostly surrounded by the Town of Watertown. The town is larger but less populated. It is located on the southern, eastern, and western side of the city. North of the city is the Town of Pamelia. , the estimated city population was 24,500.
