Fort Edward is the name of a village in Washington County, New York. It is located on the eastern shore of the Hudson River, just southeast of the small city of Glen Falls and approximately fifty miles northeast of Albany. The Vermont state line is around twenty miles east of Fort Edward. The village is within the Town of Fort Edward and is the main population area., the village population was estimated at 3,000.

Taking Route 4 south of the village leads you to the Town of Saratoga. The busiest east-west road is New York State Route 197 (NYS-197). East of Route 4, it is named Argyle Street and leads motorists to the Town of Argyle. West of Route 4, it is named Bridge Street and crosses the Hudson River into the neighboring town of Moreau. Most traffic stops in the village occur on the main roads.
The village used to have its own police department but voted to dissolve the department in 2023, shortly after its police chief was charged with corruption. Now the village receives law enforcement services mainly from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff deputies conduct traffic patrol and issue traffic citations along with state troopers. Traffic violations in the village are adjudicated in the Fort Edward Village Court. The village court shares its location and most court personnel with the Fort Edward Town Court. However they are technically two different and independent courts.
