Town of Fort Edward, New York

Fort Edward is the name of a town in Washington County, New York. The town is just southeast of the small city of Glen Falls and approximately fifty miles northeast of Albany. The town lies on the eastern bank of the Hudson River. It is close to the Vermont State line and is considered part of the Capital District Region. Within the town, is the Village of Fort Edward., the town and village combined had an estimated population of 6,000.
The area’s settlement began in 1755. A fort was constructed by Phineas Lyman, an American General during the Colonial Era. It was originally named “Fort Lyman”. The fort was renamed in 1756 to “Fort Edward” by Sir William Johnson in honor of Prince Edward, grandson of King George II. The town was formed well after the fort’s construction, officially establishing itself in 1818. The community built near the fort became a village in 1849. The site of the fort can be found near Old Fort Street just off Route 4.

The town’s main road is US Route 4 (US-4). It runs north and south along the Hudson River, the western town line. Taking it northbound will bring you to the neighboring village of Hudson Falls. Heading south on US-4 takes you to the villages of Northumberland and eventually Schuylerville. US-4 intersects with several roads as it heads through town. In the village, it meets New York State Route 197 (Reynolds Road). NY-197 crosses the Hudson River and Roger’s Island before it meets US-4. Just south of that intersection, NY-197 branches away from US-4 and heads east until it leaves town. It is the town’s main east- west bound road. Other roads worth mentioning in Fort Edward include County Route 37 (Burgoyne Avenue), County Route 42 (CR-42) and County Route 46 (CR-46).
There are two courts in Fort Edward. One is dedicated to the town, and one is dedicated to the village. They share the same location and court staff. The courts are located at the Village Hall. Any ticket issued outside the village but inside the town is made answerable to the Town Court. Any ticket issued inside the village will be made answerable to the Village Court.
