Ballston is a town in Saratoga County, New York. It is located approximately thirty miles north of Albany and is considered part of the Capital District region. The town was originally named “Ball’s Town” after a founder, Rev. Eliphalet Ball. Over time, the name of the town evolved to the current portmanteau. , Ballston’s population was estimated at 11,750. The town encompasses part of the Village of Ballston Spa. It also includes the hamlets of Ballston Center, Burnt Hills, Ballston Lake, and East Hills. The town is home to Ballston Lake, a 3.7 mile long lake with an unknown maximum depth. Upon exploration of the lake, divers found an artifact that is said to be from around 2000 B.C.

The town’s main road is New York State Route 50 (Saratoga Road). It runs diagonally heading northeast and southwest passing through the hamlets of Ballston Center and Burnt Hills. From the east comes New York State Route 67 (NYS-67). It intersects NYS-50 just north of Ballston Center. The rest of the town consists of county routes. The largest of them run north and south through the west and center portions of town. The western road is County Route 56 (Hop City Road). The center one is County Route 59 (Middle Line Road). CR-56 follows the west town line in its entirety. CR-59 enters from the north town line and terminates as it meets NYS-67 in the south part of town.

The Town of Ballston does not have a police department to conduct traffic and safety patrols. That responsibility falls on the New York State Police and the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office. All citations issued in Ballston are made answerable to the Ballston Town Court (Town of Ballston Justice Court). The only exception are violations occurring within the Village of Ballston Spa. The village has its own government and its own village court.
