Clifton is a town in St. Lawrence County, New York. It is in the center of Adirondack Park. The town is one hundred and fifty square miles of mostly forestland and lakes. The largest lake in the Adirondacks, Cranberry Lake, is within the town boundaries. The closest metropolitan area to Clifton is the City of Watertown, around seventy miles to the west. , the town had an estimated 700 residents. Clifton was first settled in 1866 and established as a town in 1868. Its early economy was based almost entirely on mining iron. Most of its residents worked at the local Clifton Iron Mine.
