Brownville is a town in Jefferson County, New York. It is part of the North Country region., the town had an estimated population of 5,700. Brownville was named after Jacob Brown, an early settler. The town was formed in 1802. It is located along the northeast shoreline of Lake Ontario and is a northwest suburb of Watertown. The town covers a total area of about sixty-six square miles. A portion of this makes up a peninsula that stretches out over the lake. Brownville contains three villages and several hamlets. The villages are Brownville, Dexter, and Glen Park. They are all found along the southern town line. The hamlets are Adams Cove, Limerick, Perch River, and Pillar Point Village.

Brownville’s main road is New York State Route 180 (Perch River Road). It runs north-south and leads motorists to the village of Dexter and the Watertown International Airport. Intersecting NYS-180 north of Dexter is New York State Route 12E (NYS-12E). This road runs northwest and southeast. Taking it south will bring you to the village of Brownville. Continuing past Brownville, it will lead to the city of Watertown. New York State Route 112 (NYS-12) cuts through the northeast corner of town. This road is another that leads to Watertown.
The villages of Brownville and Dexter have their own dedicated police departments. New York State Police and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office can conduct traffic stops as well. The town of Brownville and the village of Glen Park do not have their own police departments. State police and county sheriffs are the sole providers of police services. The villages used to have their own justice courts. However, in recent years they merged into the town court. Now the Brownville Town Court handles all town traffic cases whether they originate from within any of the villages or outside of the villages.
