Amsterdam is the name of a town in Montgomery County, New York. It is located approximately forty miles northwest of Albany and is considered part of the Mohawk Valley region. The Town of Amsterdam surrounds the City of Amsterdam on all its sides except to the south. The town and city are separate municipalities and are governed independently. The town is larger than the city but is less populated. The town encompasses the small villages of Fort Johnson and Hagaman. , the total town population was estimated at 5,500.
