Saranac is a town in Clinton County, New York. It is located in the northeast corner of the Adirondack Mountains in an area known as the North Country region. The town is approximately twenty miles west of the City of Plattsburgh and approximately thirty miles south of the Canada-US border. , the town’s population was estimated at 4,400. The town was established in 1824 and derived its name from the Saranac River that runs through town.

The main road in Saranac is New York State Route 3 (NYS-3). This is a long state road that runs northeast-southwest between Plattsburgh and Watertown. NYS-3 cuts through the Adirondacks and it is one of two east-west routes in the North Country region. The speed limit in general is 55 mph but is reduced in winding areas and in more developed areas. As NYS-3 enters the downtown area of Saranac, the speed limit is reduced to 40 mph. Most tickets issued in Saranac originate on this road. The more rural north and western area of town is served primarily by county routes and smaller local roads. County Route 1 (Standish Road) serves the hamlet of High Bank at the town’s western side. It connects to NYS-3 near the Hamlet of Clayburg. County Route 29 (Chazy Lake Road) serves the midsection of town and enables passage to the Hamlet of Russia. CR-29 meets with NYS-3 in Picketts Corners. Saranac does not have its own police department. The town roads are monitored by Troop B of the New York State Police and the Clinton County Sheriff's Department. Troopers and Sheriffs are authorized to conduct traffic stops when they have probable cause of a traffic violation. A citation issued in Saranac is answerable to the Town of Saranac Justice Court.
