Russell is a large and rural town in St. Lawrence County, New York. It is in the northwestern area of the Adirondack Park and is considered part of the state’s North Country region. The town is around thirty miles east of the city of Ogdensburg, which is located on the Canada-US border. Russell encompasses roughly ninety-seven square miles, most of which is uninhabited forestland. It was first settled in 1805 and established as a township in 1807., Russell was home to approximately 1,800 residents.

It leaves town after crossing over the South Branch of the Grass River. From the south, County Route 27 (CR-27) runs north until it meets CR-17 in Degrasse.
