Poestenkill (pronounced post-n-kill) is a town in Rensselaer County, New York. The nickname of an early important resident was “Poest.” In the Dutch language “kill” means a creek. Hence, the name of the town. Poestenkill is on the far eastern side of mainland New York, near the borders of Massachusetts and Vermont. It is considered part of New York’s Capital region and is roughly fifteen miles east of downtown Albany., the town’s population was estimated at 4,600. The town covers a total area of thirty-two square miles and encompasses the hamlets of Barberville, East Poestenkill, Ives Corner, and Poestenkill. Poestenkill is home to the Hollywood Drive-In Theatre, which has been in business since its construction in 1952.
