Oswegatchie (pronounced os-weh-GOTCH-ee) is a town in St Lawrence County, New York. It is in the northwestern portion of the state. The western town line is the St Lawrence River, which also forms the border between Canada and the United States. Oswegatchie is just outside of the small city of Ogdensburg. The British named the town Oswegatchie, after a local Native American tribe. The name supposedly means “Black Water” in their native tongue.
Oswegatchie covers a total area of seventy-one square miles., the town population was estimated at 4,100. Inside the town is a village named Heuvelton. It is the town’s most developed residential area and the location of most businesses.

The town is split in half by the Oswegatchie River, which runs north and south. On the east side of the river is the town’s busiest road, NYS-812. It runs northeast and southwest through the eastern side of town. Taking this road north will take you to the City of Ogdensburg. Taking it south will bring you through the village of Heuvelton. NYS-812 also provides access to the Ogdensburg International Airport, which is found just south of the city. New York State Route 68 (NYS-68) is another large road found east of the river. It runs northwest and southeast near the town’s northeast boundary. The western part of town is served by New York State Route 37 and County Route 6 (Black Lake Road). NYS-37 runs along the St. Lawrence River heading northeast and southwest. CR-6 runs north and south near the Oswegatchie River. It passes through the hamlet of Galilee and Lost Village.
The Oswegatchie Justice Court (Oswegatchie Town Court) has jurisdiction over all of the roads in town. This includes the roads in Heuvelton Village as well. The town and village lack a local police department. The town receives law enforcement services from the New York State Police and the St Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office. The authorities conduct traffic and safety patrols routinely. The citations they issue are made answerable to the Oswegatchie Justice Court. The most common charge issued in Oswegatchie is speeding. Speeding violations are usually given on one of the town’s main roadways.
