Town of Mohawk, New York
Mohawk is a town in Montgomery County, New York. It is located approximately fifty miles northwest of Albany., Mohawk has an estimated population of 3,500. The town includes the village of Fonda, home of the Montgomery County government offices and courts. Mohawk consists of several interestingly named hamlets such as Big Nose and Little Nose, located on opposite sides of the Mohawk River. The town is also home to the Fonda Speedway, where NASCAR held races in 1955, 1966, 1967 and 1968.

The Town of Mohawk Justice Court deals with traffic tickets issued in the town. Most traffic stops are conducted on New York State Route 5 (NYS-5). The route runs east-west through the town and along the Mohawk River. As Route 5 goes through the village of Fonda, the speed limit is reduced from 55 mph to 30 mph. Motorists often do not notice the reduced speed until it is too late. New York State Police and the Montgomery County Sheriff Deputies patrol the area and often stop motorists that are well above the 30-mph limit. State Route 30A runs north-south through Fonda as well. Like State Route 5, when approaching the town, speed is reduced quickly from 55 mph to 30.

The school is found on the eastern side of Old Johnstown Road. When leaving the area, heading out of town, motorists often speed up without realizing that the speed limit remains 30 mph despite the school area being out of sight. School zone speeding tickets are more consequential than regular speeding tickets. Much further down the road, the speed limit increases to 45 mph.
