Jay is a rural town in Essex County, New York. It is considered part of New York’s “North Country” region. Jay is roughly thirty five miles south of Plattsburg. The town covers approximately sixty-eight square miles. As of March of 2022, the population was 2,605. The town was formed in 1798 and named after John Jay, a Founding Father, abolitionist, governor, and diplomat.
The town of Jay encompasses several hamlets. They are known as Au Sable Forks, Green Street, North Jay, Jay (Formerly “Mallory’s Bush”) and Upper Jay. The town’s early growth can be attributed to its lumber and iron industry.
