Granville is a town in Washington County, New York. The town is found along the New York and Vermont state border, around twenty-five miles east of Glen Falls and around sixty-five miles northeast of Albany. The town includes a Village of Granville and has several other communities and hamlets. They are Hillsdale, Middle Granville, North Granville, Raceville, Hicks Orchard, South Granville, Truthville, West Granville, and West Pawlet. The main population area of the town is the village of Granville., the total population was approximately 6,700. Granville was established in 1780. Its early economy relied primarily on the mining and exportation of slate rock. Many quarries opened in the 1850’s. Granville has been named the “Colored State Capital of the World” due to the various colors found in the town’s mined slate rocks.
