Grafton, New York
Grafton is a town in Rensselaer County, New York. It is located approximately twenty-five miles northeast of downtown Albany. It is considered part of the Capital District region., the town had an estimated population of 2,200. The town covers a total area of forty-six square miles and is made up of several hamlets. Their names are Babcock Lake, East Grafton, Grafton (formerly Grafton Center and Patroons Mill) and Quackenkill. Grafton is home to a Buddhist Peace Pagoda. The Pagoda is one of six found in the United States.
The initial date of settlement is unknown, although it is estimated to have occurred in the late 18th century. The origin of the town’s name isn’t well known either. Some believe it is named after a town in Vermont, which was home to the town’s first supervisor, Nathaniel Dumbleton. Interestingly enough, the Grafton in Vermont was named as such by a resident after his hometown of Grafton, Massachusetts. For what it is worth, Grafton is a prominent English name.
