Franklin is a large town in Franklin County, New York. It is inside the Adirondack Park and is part of the North Country region. Franklin is around thirty five miles west of Plattsburgh, its closest city. The town covers a total area of one hundred and seventy-five square miles, a majority of which is uninhabited forestland., its population was approximately 1,195. Franklin’s main hamlet isVermontville. It is the town’s main residential area and location of town offices and businesses. It was named as such because of the many residents of Vermont who moved there in the 1800’s.

New York State Route 3 (NY-3) is the town’s main road. It runs through the town diagonally, heading northeast and southwest. It passes through the hamlet of Vermontville before leaving through the southern town line. This road meets several others as it crosses town. Those worth mentioning are County Route 4 (Alder Brook Road), County Route 26 (Port Kent-Hopkinton Turnpike), and County Route 60 (Gabriels-Onchiota Road). CR-4 enters from the east and meets NY-3 just south of the hamlet of Sugarbush. CR-26 runs north-east from NYS-3, serving most of the northern section of town. CR-60 enters from the west and passes by Rainbow Lake and the hamlet of Onchiota before meeting NY-3 near the center of town.
