Fort Covington is a town in Franklin County, New York. The town was originally known as “French Mills.” It was renamed in honor of Brigadier General Leonard Covington. He was killed in action in the War of 1812 in the proximity of the town. Fort Covington is one of the northernmost towns in New York State. It is located at the Canadian border in the center of New York. The city of Plattsburgh is approximately seventy miles east. The city of Ogdensburg is approximately sixty miles southwest.
