Fairfield is a town in Herkimer County, New York., the population was estimated at 1,600. The town was named after Fairfield, Connecticut. It encompasses forty-one square miles and is located twenty miles east of Utica. Historians are unable to pinpoint the exact year of settlement, however, they say that the population of the town boomed after 1785. Most migrants came from New England territories. Officially, the township was established in 1796. Fairfield surrounds one half of the village of Middleville, which is located on the western town line. The town also contains three hamlets named Eatonville, Fairfield, and Old City. Fairfield was mentioned in the movie Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade. In the film, it is revealed that Indiana Jones taught archaeology at a fictional university named Barnett College, which happens to be located in Fairfield.
