Dickinson is a large and rural town in Franklin County, New York. It is nestled in the northern section of Adirondack Park, around twenty miles south of the Canadian border. The closest metropolitan area is the small city of Ogdensburg, around fifty miles west. Dickinson covers approximately forty-four square miles, most of it is forestland. , the town’s population was estimated at 950. Dickinson consists of the hamlets of Alburg, Dickinson, Dickinson Center, East Dickinson, and Irish Corners. The town was established in 1809 and named in honor of Philemon Dickinson, a brigadier general during the American Revolutionary War.

There are two main roads in Dickinson, County Route 5 (Moira-St. Regis Falls Road) and New York State Route 11B (State Route 11B). The CR-5 goes north-south and the NYS-11B goes east-west. They meet in the hamlet of Dickinson Center. Traffic stops will occur on these main roads. County sheriffs or state police conduct traffic stops. There is no local police. Typical infractions charged are for speeding, driving with suspended privileges, driving without a license, disobeying a traffic control device, and equipment violations.All traffic related charges are adjudicated in the Dickinson Town Court (Town of Dickinson Justice Court). The court is located in the Hamlet of Dickinson Center. It is a low volume court, only having sessions once or twice a month.
