Columbia is a town in Herkimer County, New York. , the estimated population was 1,500. The town is located around twenty miles southeast of Utica and around eighty miles west of Albany. The town of Columbia was settled in the late 1700’s by German migrants and was initially called “Coonradstown”. There is no record of why the name was changed to Columbia. Columbia covers thirty-five square miles and is made up of numerous hamlets. They are: Cedarville, Columbia Center, Dennison Corners, Elizabethtown, Getman Corners, Kingdom, Millers Mills Crossing, North Columbia, South Columbia, Spinnerville, and Youngs Crossings.
