Colton is a town in St. Lawrence County, New York. It is in the Adirondack Park and is considered part of the North Country region. , Colton’s population was estimated at 1,400. The town was established in 1843. It was first settled in 1825 under the name “Matildaville”. Sometime later it was renamed after an early settler named Jesse Colton Higley. Colton covers a total area of two hundred and fifty-five square miles, making it the largest town in St. Lawrence County. Several hamlets are found in Colton. They are named Colton, Irish Settlement, Sevey, Shurteff, South Colton, and Stark.
