Chester is a town in Warren County, New York. It is located on the eastern foothills of the Adirondacks, approximately twenty miles north of Lake George and approximately eight miles north of Albany. The town is considered part of the North Country region. Chester’s two hamlets are Chestertown and Pottersville. The former is the main population area and the location of town offices. Town offices and the town court are also located in Chestertown. As of June of 2023, the town population was estimated at 3,000.

The Adirondack Northway (Interstate 87) runs north-south along the eastern border of the town. The highway is two lanes in each direction and has a speed limit of 65 miles per hour. The I-87 in Warren County is patrolled by Troop G of the New York State Police. They conduct many traffic stops in the Chester area. Most of their citations are for speeding violations. This road comes from the south via Warrensburg and runs north-south in the center of town. When it reaches the Hamlet of Chestertown it turns west and joins Route 8. They run concurrently for a bit before the US-9 turns northward again and heads towards the Hamlet of Pottersville. There it begins to run parallel with the I-87 as it leaves town.
