Canton, New York
Canton is a town in St. Lawrence County, New York. It is located at the western foothills of the Adirondack Mountains and considered part of the “North Country” region. Canton is around twenty miles east of the City of Ogdensburg, which is located on the US-Canada border.
The town encompasses a Village of Canton. The village is the main population area and the location of most businesses. The village is in the center of the county and thus serves as the county seat. This means it is the location of all county government offices and courts. The village is also home to two small colleges, St. Lawrence University and SUNY Canton. The town covers a total area of one hundred and six square miles. The first settlers to arrive in Canton did so in 1800. By 1805 the settlement received its township status. Canton was one of the first ten towns to be formed in St. Lawrence County. The town also contains a small village of Rensselaer Falls and the hamlets of Crary Mills, Brick Chapel, Eddy, Morley, and Pyrites. , the total combined population was estimated at 10,700. This number does not include the roughly five thousand college students.

The two main roads that run through Canton are US Route 11 (US-11) and New York State Route 68 (NYS-68). US-11 is a highway that runs across the entire east coast of the United States. Its northern terminus is in Rouses Point, New York. Its southern terminus is in New Orleans, Louisiana. The portion of US-11 that enters Canton does so heading north-east and south-west. It intersects NYS-68 in the village of Canton. Both roads combine to form the village’s main road, Main Street. NYS-68 runs northwest and southeast through town. Rensselaer Falls is accessible by either County Route 14 (CR-14) or 15 (CR-15). CR-14 heads northeast and southwest in the northwest section of town. It intersects NYS-68 near the middle of the northwest boundary. CR-15 runs northwest and southeast along the town’s southwest boundary. It intersects US-11 near the south corner of town.
