Broadalbin was first settled around 1770 and formally established in 1793. The town derived its name from the Breadalbane Region in Scotland. The town also encompasses the Village of Broadalbin. Most town offices, including the town court, are located in the village. A small part of the village is located within the neighboring town of Mayfield. Several hamlets make up the town. Hills Corners in the southern portion of town is served by two roads, County Route 126 (Hagaman Road) and County Route 107. CR-126 intersects with NYS-29 in the Village of Broadalbin.
