Augusta, New York
Augusta is a town in Oneida County, New York. It is considered part of the Central New York region and is around forty-five miles east of Syracuse. , the town population was approximately 2,000. Augusta consists of several hamlets and one village. The hamlets are Augusta, Knoxboro, Lyons Mills, and Wells Corners. The village, where the town government offices are located, is named Oriskany Falls (not to be confused with Oriskany, another village in Oneida County).
Augusta was settled in 1793. The origin of the name is interesting. According to legend, Augustus Van Horn, a militia general, told Colonel Thomas Cassety that if Cassety would arrange the town to be named after him, Van Horn would get him a new military hat. So Augustus Van Horn got his town and Thomas Cassety got his hat.

New York State Route 26 (NYS-26) is an arterial road in Augusta. It runs north-south from the center of town. Shortly after, the south portion of NYS-26 heads southeast towards the Village of Oriskany Falls. Intersecting NYS-26 in the center of Augusta is County Route 40 (CR-40), which cuts through the town heading east and west. It passes the Hamlet of Knoxboro along the way. From Knoxboro, County Route 12 (CR-12) heads north and leaves town.
The Augusta Town Court (also known as the Augusta Justice Court) is located in the village of Oriskany Falls. The court adjudicates tickets issued by the New York State Police and the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office. There is no town police in Augusta or village police in Oriskany Falls.
The most common charge issued in Augusta is speeding. Drivers are typically cited as they approach the village, where the speed limit drops significantly from 55 miles per hour to 30. Motorists approaching the village from the north may notice road signs mentioning horse drawn carriages. There is a small but notable Amish Community nearby.
