Augusta is a town in Oneida County, New York. It is considered part of the Central New York region and is around forty-five miles east of Syracuse. As of June of 2022, the town population was 2,230. Augusta consists of several hamlets and one village. The hamlets are Augusta, Knoxboro, Lyons Mills and Wells Corners. Augusta was settled in 1793. The origin of the name is interesting. According to legend, Augustus Van Horn, a militia general, told Colonel Thomas Cassety that if Cassety would arrange the town to be named after him, Van Horn would get him a new military hat. So Augustus Van Horn got his town and Thomas Cassety got his hat.
