Traffic Tickets in Adams
The majority of tickets handled in the Adams Town Court originate on Interstate 81. The I-81 runs north-south directly through the town. It is two lanes in each direction, divided by a large grassy median. The speed limit is 65 mph. However, there is rarely traffic in this area and the lanes are set straight with wide shoulders. The circumstances lead motorists to exceed the speed limit, mostly inadvertently. This portion of the interstate is patrolled exclusively by Troop D of the New York State Police.
The court also sees tickets issued on local town and village streets. The busiest local road in Adams is US-11. It runs north-south parallel with the I-81 and serves as the “Main Street” through Adams. County Route 63 (North Harbor Road) and County Route 66 (South Harbor Road) provide access to I-81 in the northern part of town. In the village of Adams, I-81 is accessible via New York State Route 178 (NYS-178). It runs east and west across the southernmost part of town. NYS-178 also happens to be the village’s main road.
Traffic stops on local roads can be conducted by deputies of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office or and the New York State Police. The village has a local police department that does the same only within the village. The village used to have its own court, but they merged into the town court in recent years.
